The Love of God

This is perhaps my favorite hymn. I love the poetic lyrics and the beautiful word pictures of God's love and grace -- and the history behind it is fascinating.

If you've never heard this hymn, then I suggest you get a copy of a CD from Pastor MacArthur's son-in-law, Kory Welch. He has a wonderful tenor voice. Pastor MacArthur, who also has a wonderful voice, joins him on two songs. Denny got me a copy of this CD for Christmas 2 years ago shortly before I contracted Crohn's, and I took it to the hospital with me. It was immensely comforting.

I also love the version done by 4HIM.

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Refrain

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

    Oh, Kim! Mine too! I love the different sounding arrangements -- like how the "The Love of God" has sort of an eastern sound. I love the finger cymbals (I think that's what they are).

    And Heidi, I really miss the hymns in most churches today. Many of the churches in our area have gone to almost total contemporary worship. I think they're missing out on something of real worth when they do that.

    Good morning! I think that those who follow Oprah's theology are going to be hugely disappointed. But imagine the influence she would have if just just got it...

    I don't watch her anymore--it's too frustrating. But the funny thing is how she told the woman not to interupt, but how she is constantly interupting folks.
    :)

    That's a good point Heidi! She does always interupt, at least that's what I remember. I haven't watched her (except for this clip) since high school.

    I have no idea why the comments were closed on that post, but they're open now. I had a very hard time getting that post to publish in the first place. It's my first video clip, and there was some problem getting it to accept the html. But anyway...
